Travelling with Animals on Sydney Ferries

Customers are welcome aboard Sydney Ferries' services with their Assistance Animal or their Pet according to some simple rules.

1. Assistance Animals on Sydney Ferries

Customers travelling on Sydney Ferries services with any of the following animals are permitted on board ferries with their animals, at all times.

  • Seeing or hearing guide dogs (including those in training)
  • Police dogs (including those in training) or an
  • Authorised Assistance Animals

Assistance Animals must be under the control of the registered handler at all times. Guide and hearing dogs must wear a harness or medallion of registration. Interstate and internationally certified guide and hearing dogs are also recognised. All other animals must be certified as a trained Assistance Animal.

Assistance Animal Permit

Customers travelling regularly on Sydney Ferries' services with an Assistance Animal, may apply for an Assistance Animal Permit- available from the Passes and Concession office at RailCorp (1300 302 130). This Permit enables a person with disabilities to travel on public transport with a certified Assistance Animal. Customers can show this Card to the Ferry Master or Wharf Attendant when travelling with their assistance animal and are recognised on all NSW State Transit services.

2. Pets on Sydney Ferries

Customers may also board a ferry with a pet such as a dog, cat, bird or other animal, as long as the following criteria are adhered to;

  • The Ferry Master may refuse to allow a pet on a ferry if they pose a risk to the safety of other passengers or the ferry, or if the vessel is reaching its capacity
  • Pets - other than dogs, must be restrained in a suitable box, basket or other container to be allowed on board the ferry, as required by the law (NSW Passenger Transport Act and Regulations)
  • Dogs must remain on leashes and under control at all times
  • Pets that are not clean, appear vicious, or likely to annoy, threaten or inconvenience other passengers will not be allowed on a ferry
  • Pets must not travel in enclosed ferry cabin areas; unless outdoor areas are unavailable
  • Animals are to remain separate from other travelling animals to assist in ensuring the safety and comfort for other passengers and pets
  • Customers must use the wide gate at ticket barriers and be aware that they are responsible for the conduct, care, feeding and toileting of the animal.
